Page 1 of 2 Growing up with a dad who DJ'ed in an Ottawa nightclub, The Bliz always had a love of vinyl and was surrounded by an ever-expanding record collection in the early 80's. Listening to Hip Hop for most of his childhood, his love of electronic music started with his first party; Get Down at the Better Living Centre, where an attendance of around 50,000 ravers changed the way he experienced parties from then on. Upon a windfall of $2000 one day in 1997, The Bliz decided to invest in Technics 1200 turntables at a local record shop and when he first touched down on the decks, he knew he was meant to play records. He spent every weekend after that at the infamous Eastern Bloc in Toronto, buying records and hob-knobbing with some of Toronto's most famous DJ's. He looked up to DJ's like S.O.S., Kamikaze, Unabomber, and Hartec, as well as U.K. artists like Mark EG, and Lady Dana, and Amsterdam's Hardcore Master BuzzFuzz. Through watching his heroes intently, and fighting through trial and error, The Bliz learned quickly how to drive the crowds crazy. The first gigs he started playing were the Open Decks Tuesdays at The Mermaid's Lounge in Hess Village, and The Bliz made sure that he went out every week to make connections and occasionally throw parties as well (on average about 5 times a year). He lived like most DJ's, constantly buying and trading stacks of wax and partying 6 nights a week, making his presence known. At one point, The Bliz tried his hand at producing his own tracks, partnered with other producers, but found after a while that it really wasn't his thing; "It's better to play in front of a large crowd than sit in front of the computer." The Bliz has played mostly in Southern Ontario; namely Toronto, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, Guelph, and the Niagara region and has always looked forward to playing internationally. He has played alongside S.O.S., OS2, Bacchus, S4, as well as numerous back-to-back sets with Unabomber, DJ Bionix, Hardflow, DJ Damo, and many more. After DJ'ing for about 3 years, The Bliz decided he should launch into full scale promotion and decided it would be a good outlet not only for himself to play more parties, but also build up a community of like-minded DJ's that would play at each others parties as well. Having always been into the hard sounds, and always being the guy at the store who says, Hey, we should get extra bass bins so the party'll be slammin! it just seemed to be the natural progression. |
